Description
Life on the prairies of the American Midwest was difficult for settlers. The weather was severe; very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. There were wild animals and Indians to contend with. To protect their families and keep them secure, settlers built sod houses. The home was only open on one side. It was covered with dirt and sod as a means of insulation which kept it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It also served to camouflage the dwelling so enemies would no easily see it.

V. Nice reminder of life in the past. How brave these people were to build a life out on flat lands in the middle of this country. Thanks for the history lesson for the younger people. I don't know it they teach this kind of history anymore. So glad you have captured this for all time.
